Formally called St. Augustine Catholic Parish Church is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and inscribed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The church was constructed in 1694 and finished in 1710.
It's known for its distinct architecture highlighted by the huge buttresses at the side and the back. These buttresses help protect the church from earthquake. This design was developed after earthquakes destroyed many churches.
The church was destroyed before by an earthquake in 1865 and 1885, but restored again with the initiative of the former first lady Imelda Marcos.
The church is best viewed during daylight, looking so old yet proud. Same as the other churches in Ilocos, its bell tower is physically separated from the church. It's said that this was used during the world war as watchtower. I will come back here again, to explore more.
